Friday TN Question No.3

Each week we ask our readers a simple question about their Travellers Notebooks and how they use them.

So this weeks question:
How many booklets/notebooks do you carry in your travellers notebook?
Please answer in the comments below, although I know a few of you will answer my question on Facebook.

My Travellers Notebook - Steve

This is another new series here on Travellers Notebook Times, I hope some more of our readers will join in. In this first post I 'interviewed myself' ! But I'm sure you will get the idea especially if you have read any of the reader under the spotlight posts over on Philofaxy

1. How long have you been using a travellers note book for?

Only a few weeks since starting this blog! But I'm enjoying using it as an addition to using a Filofax.

2. What size(s) of travellers notebooks do you use?

At the moment just a Pocket size one made by Ray Blake as shown in the pictures.

3. How many inserts/booklets does your travellers notebook hold?

The pocket size cover Ray Blake made for me comfortably holds three Moleskine Cahiers

4. What does each insert or notebook get used for?

I'm using one for notes and ideas for this blog and another for Philofaxy, and the third one I just use for jotting down general notes in it. I think the dividing up of different topics in to different notebooks helps me focus my attention and where as previously I've not got on that well with a bound notebook for notes, this sort of approach seems to be working quite well for me. I continue to use my ring bound Van der Spek organisers for my main planning and task lists.

5. If you could have an insert designed just for you, what would it contain?

I think I would create/print a blog planner of some kind for this blog, at the moment I'm piggy backing things in to my Van der Spek I use for planning things on Philofaxy. I'm sure Ray might have created a suitable insert I need to take a look and turn it in to a booklet for next year. A simply monthly calendar and some notes pages or something like that.

6. Have you ever considered making your own travellers notebook cover?

Not yet, but I might try to make one soon, something that takes the larger Moleskine Journal Cahier (210x130mm) would be excellent.

7. Apart from paper inserts, what else do you carry in your TN and how?

Just a pen at the moment.

8. What attracts you to using a travellers notebook compared to other formats?

Their simplicity and the ease of manufacturer on your own kitchen table/worktop with the minimum of tools.

9. What would you like to see in a travellers notebook design?

May be a simple pen loop, or some pockets but definitely a pen loop. I tried a clip on one but that didn't work so I currently tuck my pen under the elastic.

10. What advice would you give to a new travellers notebook user?

Give one a try, I wasn't sure if I would use one at first, but I'm finding it helps me focus my mind on the many different things that crop in life, I've tried using a pocket Filofax of similar size before and whilst it sort of worked I didn't carry it around as much as I do the travellers notebook.

11. Finally, what would you like to see on Travellers Notebook Times?

More readers comments! And more people sending us details about their blogs so we can include them in our weekly web finds.

Friday TN Question No. 1

As you all know I'm very new to using the Travellers Notebooks, sure I've used some notebooks in the past and I've used a Filofax Flex with mixed success. With so many people in our planner community going down the TN route, I had to try it out for myself.

However, I am the curious sort of bloke and I'm always interested in how people use different planner  solutions. So by asking some simple questions, one each week, I'm sure I will learn a lot more about how people use their Travellers Notebooks and hopefully other new users will do to.

So this week I will kick off with a simple and safe question:
Do you use a Travellers Notebook instead of a Filofax or as well as?
Please answer in the comments below, although I know a few of you will answer my question on Facebook.

And don't worry I will shortly be revealing how I use my lovely Travellers Notebook that Ray Blake sent me soon. It's not just a photo prop!

Travel Wallet or potential notebook cover?

We were given this Smith and Canova travel wallet as a leaving present when we left UK back in 2010. It has sat in a cupboard still in the wrapping for a few years. That is until I spotted a video by KateB TPS, the layout was very similar to ours, on looking at the makers name it was the same make as well.

Unlike the one that Kate bought this one has a clasp and two poppers on the front to allow for expansion. In Kate's video she showed how to use the wallet with notebooks in it. With a little bit of inventiveness I managed to create a simple notebook for the wallet which is 205 mm tall by 11cm wide a size that isn't that dis-similar to what people are already using in their Traveller's Notebooks already. I made it slightly shorter so that it would slip in to one of the pockets, but the wallet will take a full height 210mm notebook.

I grabbed a file from Ray Blake's site and just adjusted the margins a little, and there I had a simple notebook. I had some 160 gsm paper as well to create a cover and with the aid of a long arm stapler I was able to create a simple notebook.

Looking at this wallet though it could easily take two or three notebooks. With the clasp moved to the expanded popper I can get my fingers between the closed covers easily. And the notebooks could be easily held in place with elastic bands going over the outside of the cover.

For me though just the one notebook is fine tucked in to one of the big full height pockets. The wallet has plenty of card slots and outside cover slots for train tickets and airline check in boarding cards as well. There are pockets for your passports and small zip pockets for coins too. And all in a nice leather cover.

The travel wallet is still available at John Lewis in UK not this colour but the brown one as shown in Kate's video.

The Front with a full height slip pocket on the left

Two poppers to allow for expansion and the left hand
one is still covered when the right hand one is used

Lots of pockets and card slots and a pen loop too

The diagonal topped pocket is ideal for boarding cards and train tickets

The notebook I made.
